Biography

Dr Abhijit Majumdar joined the department in 2007 as assistant professor. Currently he is Professor in Textile Engineering group. He graduated from Calcutta University in 1995 with first class first position in Textile Technology program. Subsequently, he acquired M.Tech degree in Textile Engineering from IIT Delhi and Ph.D in Production and Operations Management from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He also holds an MBA from IIT Delhi with specialization in Operations Management. He has worked in industries like Voltas Limited and Vardhman Group.

He has published 75 research papers in international refereed journals and guided six Ph.D students. His research areas include protective textile materials, soft computing applications, operations and supply chain management. He has authored a textbook entitled 'Principles of Woven Fabric Manufacturing' published by CRC press. He has also edited two books published by Woodhead Publisher, U. K. and authored one monograph (Textile Progress) published by Taylor and Francis.

He is the associate editor of Journal of the Institution of Engineers (India) Series E (Chemical and Textile Engineering) published by Springer. He is a recipient of Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowship (2009-2014) of IIT Delhi, Teaching Excellence Award (2015) of IIT Delhi and Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award (2017). Apart from academics, he is an ardent follower of cricket.

Research Highlights

1. Soft body armour development: Body armour falls into two categories, namely soft body armor and hard body armor. A soft body armor is primarily constituted of 20-40 layers of high performance fabrics and can provide protection against low-level firearm threats (velocity up to ≈450 m s-1). On the other hand, a hard body armor comprises of metallic or ceramic (boron carbide, silica carbide) plates and is meant to stop projectiles fired at higher velocities (up to 1000 m s-1). For last ten years, our research group is involved in exploring new high performance fibrous materials and designs for developing light weight and flexible body armor for the armed forces. Most of these researches have been done in active collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

Woven and unidirectional (UD) fabrics made from several high performance fibres like aramids: Kevlar®, and Technora®; ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE): Dyneema® and Spectra®, and polybenzobisoxazole (PBO): Zylon® have beed being used. 2D, 3D and double fabrics of varying structural configurations have been woven to establish structure-property relationships in terms of ballistic resistance performance. To further enhance their energy absorbing capacity, these fabrics have been treated with shear thickening fluids (STFs) that significantly enhance the energy absorption during bullet impact. Continuous efforts are being made to modify these STFs using graphene oxide, halloysite nanotubes, cellulose nanofibres, etc. as well. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods have also been developed on high performance fabrics by hydrothermal method to increase inter-yarn friction. Research scholars working in this area have received several national and international awards. Our group has also applied for six Indian patents in this area.

 

2. Sustainable supply chain management: Green supply chain management implies the implementation of environmental friendly practices in every stages of supply chain including procurement, manufacturing, distribution and reverse logistics. Textile and clothing supply chain creates enormous environmental load due to the excessive use of water, energy, pesticides and chemicals during fibre production and subsequent manufacturing stages. Though textile and clothing supply chains of India play a pivotal role in the country’s economy, the implementation of green initiatives are still at the nascent stage. Our research group is working on the environmental and social sustainability aspects of textile and clothing supply chains in India. The barriers and risks associated with green supply chain have been analysed and risk mitigation strategies have been developed. The group has also explored the use of recycled polyester fibres from PET bottles as an alternative to virgin polyester fibres. Life cycle analysis of recycled polyester has also been done using Simapro® platform. Quantitative modelling has also been done for supply chain network design and optimization to minimise the carbon footprints.
