Faculty

Abhijit Majumdar is holding the position of Ramchandran Jaikumar Chair Professor for Decision Sciences (Operations Management) in the Textile and Fibre Engineering department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India (IIT Delhi). He joined the department as an assistant professor in 2007 and became a full professor in 2018. He graduated from Calcutta University with a Gold medal in Textile Technology program. He also holds M.Tech (Textile Engineering) and MBA (Operations Management) degrees from IIT Delhi. He acquired a PhD in Production Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. 

He is a visiting professor at the University of Huddersfield, UK and the National Institute of Design, Andhra Pradesh. He serves as an academic advisor of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the Technological University of Mara, Malaysia. He is also the chairperson of the Buildtech sectional committee of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). 

He has guided 15 PhD scholars. He has authored two textbooks and edited five books. He has published 150 research papers in refereed journals. He is an area editor of the Operations Management Research journal (Springer). He is also on the editorial board of various international journals including Fibres and Polymers (Springer), Journal of the Textile Institute (Taylor & Francis), Engineered Fibres and Fabrics (Sage), Cleaner Logistics and Supply Chain (Elsevier) etc. He is a recipient of the Eminent Engineer Award (2023) from Institutions of Engineers (India), Institute Chair Professorship of IIT Delhi (2019-2021), Best Industry Relevant Masters Project Supervision Award, IIT Delhi (2019); Gandhian Young Technology Innovation (GYTI) Award (2016 and 2021); Teaching Excellence Award of IIT Delhi (2015) and Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowship, IIT Delhi (2009-2014).

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

1. Soft body armour development: Body Armour falls into two categories, namely soft body armor and hard body armor. A soft body armor is primarily constituted of 20-40 layers of high performance fabrics and can provide protection against low-level firearm threats (velocity up to ≈450 m s-1). On the other hand, hard body armor comprises of metallic or ceramic (boron carbide, silica carbide) plates and is meant to stop projectiles fired at higher velocities (up to 1000 m s-1). For last ten years, our research group is involved in exploring new high performance fibrous materials and designs for developing light weight and flexible body armor for the armed forces. Most of these researches have been done in active collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

Woven and unidirectional (UD) fabrics made from several high-performance fibres like aramids: Kevlar®, and Technora®; ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE): Dyneema® and Spectra®, and polybenzobisoxazole (PBO): Zylon® have beed being used. 2D, 3D and double fabrics of varying structural configurations have been woven to establish structure-property relationships in terms of ballistic resistance performance. To further enhance their energy absorbing capacity, these fabrics have been treated with shear thickening fluids (STFs) that significantly enhance the energy absorption during bullet impact. Continuous efforts are being made to modify these STFs using graphene oxide, halloysite nanotubes, cellulose nanofibers, etc. as well. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods have also been developed on high performance fabrics by hydrothermal method to increase inter-yarn friction. Research scholars working in this area have received several national and international awards. Our group has also applied for six Indian patents in this area.

 

2. Sustainable supply chain management: Green supply chain management implies the implementation of environmentally friendly practices in every stage of the supply chain including procurement, manufacturing, distribution and reverse logistics. Textile and clothing supply chain creates enormous environmental load due to the excessive use of water, energy, pesticides and chemicals during fibre production and subsequent manufacturing stages. Though textile and clothing supply chains of India play a pivotal role in the country’s economy, the implementation of green initiatives are still at the nascent stage. Our research group is working on the environmental and social sustainability aspects of textile and clothing supply chains in India. The barriers and risks associated with the green supply chain have been analyzed and risk mitigation strategies have been developed. The group has also explored the use of recycled polyester fibres from PET bottles as an alternative to virgin polyester fibres. Life cycle analysis of recycled polyester has also been done using Simapro® platform. Quantitative modelling has also been done for supply chain network design and optimization to minimize the carbon footprints.

 

3. Soft computing and multi-criteria decision-making: The structure-property relationships of fibrous materials are quite intricate. Our research group has been working on the application of various soft computing techniques to predict the behavior of fibrous materials. The tensile, thermal resistance, air permeability, UV resistance and bacterial resistance of woven and knitted fabrics have been predicted by artificial neural network (ANN), fuzzy inference system, and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). Hybrid ANN-GA model has also been developed for engineering woven fabrics with desired functional properties. The group is also working in the area of multi-criteria decision making like Analytic Hierarchy Process, TOPSIS and their fuzzy variants.

4. Development of woven bio-composites: Our research group is also working in the field of bio-composites for the development of green-sustainable products. Polylactic acid has been used as a biopolymer and it has been modified using various plasticizers to optimize the tensile and stiffness behavior of film. Woven fabrics made from natural fibres like Ramie and Flax are being used as reinforcement. Bio-composites have been characterized for various mechanical and thermal responses.
