Faculty

Dr. Sohel Rana is an Associate Professor in the Department of Textile & Fibre Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. Prior to joining IIT Delhi, Dr. Rana has worked as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, UK and a Senior Researcher at the University of Minho, Portugal. He obtained his B.Tech. degree in Textile Technology from University of Calcutta, India (2002), and M.Tech. (2005) and Ph.D. in Fibre Science and Technology (2011) from IIT Delhi.

Dr. Rana is actively involved in the research and development of smart fibrous and composite materials, nanocomposites, bio-composites, natural fibres, etc. He has been a key researcher in developing ‘multi-functional and bio-based hierarchical composites and high performance ‘auxetic structures and composites’ for personal protection applications. Dr. Rana has edited several books on advanced textile and composite materials with the leading publishers, among which “Advanced Composites in Aerospace Engineering” (Woodhead Publishing), “Braided Structures and Composites” (CRC Press), “Fibrous and Textile Materials for Composite Applications” (Springer) received well recognition within the scientific community. To his credit, Dr. Rana has authored/edited 8 books, published over 40 papers in peer reviewed international journals, contributed to 16 book chapters and more than 70 papers in international conferences.

 

SPECIALIZATION & RESEARCH INTEREST

  • Development and Characterization of Hierarchical and Mult-scale Composites

Dispersion of micro and nanomaterials in polymeric matrices, bio-based and thermoplastic hierarchical composites, advanced characterization of composites.

  • Development of Conductive, Smart and Multi-functional Textiles:

Strain/stress and pressure sensing textiles, ion conducting textiles, electrically conductive textiles, functionalization of textiles with nanomaterials.

  • Fibres and Textile-Reinforced Cementitious Composites

Reinforcement of cementitious materials with nanomaterials, microfibres, plant fibres and hybrid fibre systems, reinforcement of cementitious composites with braided and auxetic textile structures, structural health monitoring (SHM).
